Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road
The secret gateway to the south
With the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road, one of the best-known mountain pass routes of the Alps awaits you. The drive to the 2,509 m high Timmelsjoch through the Ötztal glacier world remains an unforgettable experience. On the highest mountain pass in the Eastern Alps you’ll find spectacular viewpoints and can experience a journey through the vegetation zones – from lush alpine meadows and blooming alpine roses to barren alpine landscapes with snowfields at the height of summer. Plenty of bends make for an unforgettable driving experience and are an insider’s tip for rides with the convertible, motorbike and racing cycle. Don’t forget to put in a stop at the Top *Mountain Motorcycle Museum at the toll station of the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road.* In Europe’s highest-located motorbike museum around 170 precious gems are on show for two-wheeler nostalgics.
DRIVING TIME (Sölden-Top Mountain Motorcycle Museum): approx. 20 min.
Ötztal Glacier Road
An excursion into the permanent ice
The Ötztal Glacier Road is considered the highest road in the Eastern Alps region and leads from Sölden up to the glacier at 2,820 m above sea level. The tour leads past the Rettenbach Glacier, where every year in October the legendary FIS Ski Worldcup Opening takes place. On the way to the Tiefenbach glacier, you will pass through the highest-located tunnel in Europe – the Rosi-Mittermaier-Tunnel. Experience a breathtaking outing into the permanent ice while retracing the steps of James Bond – because in the latest blockbuster SPECTRE, 007 embarks on an action-packed car chase on the Ötztal Glacier Road.
DRIVING TIME (Sölden – Tiefenbach Glacier): approx. 30 min.
Niederthai & Stuibenfall
A nature experience of the special kind
A further highlight for all convertible drivers is the tour up to the high plateau of Niederthai, past Tyrol’s highest waterfall. The Stuibenfall with a drop of 159 m is a gigantic natural spectacle with its origin in Niederthai. More than 700 levels, and 80-metre long suspension bridge and spectacular viewing platforms near the thundering masses of water allow the Stuibenfall to be experienced and accessed by foot. On the way back, a culinary stop in Umhausen in the more than 100-year-old traditional inn Andreas Hofer is worthwhile.
DRIVING TIME (Sölden – Niederthai): approx. 30 min.
